Will Braces Hurt When They’re Applied?

Minimal discomfort is to be expected when Smile Doctors applies braces to your or your child’s teeth. It may take longer to eat meals the day your braces are applied as you adjust to chewing. For the first few days, eating softer foods — such as yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese — is a safe bet.

What Happens the First Week?

Getting braces takes some getting used to. For the first four or five days, you may feel soreness in your mouth as it adjusts. Biting may cause some discomfort because your teeth will be tender. Both can be soothed by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. If the discomfort is severe, then Tylenol™ or a similar over-the-counter medication can help alleviate any discomfort until your mouth fully adjusts. You can also apply wax to the braces to keep them from rubbing against the inside of your mouth. A Smile Doctors Team Member can provide instructions on how to use the wax when you first get your braces. After this first five-day period, discomfort is typically gone in most patients.

And What if There is Discomfort Later?

There may be limited discomfort throughout the duration of your treatment, but don't worry — this is manageable! If your braces hurt occasionally during the duration of treatment, Smile Doctors suggests the same tips as the first few days after getting braces.

Tips for Dealing with Discomfort:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Relieve more severe discomfort, like mouth soreness and headaches, with Tylenol or a similar over-the-counter medication.
  • Eat soft foods for a day or two.

Another way to prepare for getting braces - and to boost motivation during treatment - is to think about what it will be like to get your braces off! From straightening crooked or crowded teeth to aligning overbites or underbites, braces improve orofacial health. The experience at Smile Doctors helps transform patients so you don’t just smile, you Smile Happy!
